Montana received $12.6 million from the VW Diesel Emissions Settlement Environmental Mitigation Trust to fund projects that mitigate NOx emissions in the transportation sector. Eligible projects include replacement, repowering, or retrofitting of diesel trucks, buses, freight switcher locomotives, airport ground support equipment, ferries/tugs, and forklifts, as well as light-duty EV charging stations (up to 15% of funds).

- Eligible categories include: Class 4-7 local freight medium trucks (GVWR 14,000–33,000 lbs., 1992–2009 engine model year); Class 4-8 school, shuttle, or transit buses (2009 engine model year or older); Class 8 local freight trucks (1992–2009 engine model year); airport ground support equipment (Tier 0, Tier 1, Tier 2 uncertified, or certified to 3g/bhp-hr spark ignition); ferries/tugs (unregulated, Tier 1, Tier 2 marine engines); forklifts (greater than 8,000 lb. lift capacity); railroad freight switchers (pre-Tier 4, operating at least 1,000 hours per year); and light-duty EV charging station
