Clean Peak Energy Standard (CPS)

A Massachusetts portfolio standard established by the 2018 Act to Advance Clean Energy that requires electricity suppliers to procure Clean Peak Energy Certificates (CPECs) generated by eligible clean peak resources (new RPS Class I generation, existing generation paired with storage, qualified energy storage systems, and demand response resources) that discharge during peak demand periods. Resources earn CPECs which have market value.

- New RPS Class I generation units in operation on or after 1/1/19; existing RPS Class I/Class II generation units (in operation prior to 1/1/19) paired with a Qualified Energy Storage System; Qualified Energy Storage Systems operating to primarily store and discharge renewable energy and installed on or after 1/1/19; Demand Response Resources as defined by the Clean Peak Energy Standard.
